Ditch the Clutter
One of the most important things you should do before you redecorate is to completely declutter your entire home. We recommend starting with one room and creating two piles – one for the things you’d like to keep and the other for junk to donate or get rid of. When it comes to getting rid of old stuff, it can be really difficult as we can often become too emotionally attached to everything. However, it’s best to get rid of the items that no longer spark joy!
Create a Mood Board
The second thing you should do when redecorating is to create a mood board as inspiration for your new interior. For example, social media sites such as Instagram has an explore feature where you can connect with interior design accounts. Additionally, websites such as Pinterest allow us to connect with designers and artists across the world. These sites are perfect for getting interior inspiration and helping us shape our ideas when it comes to redecorating. It’s much better to narrow down what we think we want rather than diving in with the first colour of paint we think we like.
Don’t Purchase Items all at Once
We also recommend that you try not to purchase all of your furniture at the one time, from the one shop. It can be an exciting trip to head to IKEA and blow all of our money on flatpack furniture from the same range. Instead of this, it’s better to purchase items as you mean to go along. Stick to small or interior designers who offer items such as silk lamp shades and other luxury items. This can include making a day of it and travelling to local furniture shops or even better, having bespoke furniture especially made for you! With this, you can suit the design of your home to your taste and not fill it with the furniture you’ll hate in a year.
Invest in Flooring
Lastly, you should consider investing in flooring. Redecorating doesn’t always have to come with new flooring, but it’s a great option to consider if you want a fresh start. There are many different types of flooring to choose from such as hardwood, luxury vinyl tiles, carpet and so much more. Depending on what type of flooring you get, this can actually increase the value of your home and make it more attractive to future buyers if you decide to move. Additionally, if you love redecorating every so often, cheaper flooring options are also available that will won’t seem as much of an expense to change more than once.
Redecorating your home doesn’t have to be stressful – make it fun!
